The Purpose of the Blog
In California, we are in the middle of a drought. Our water uses are too much for the minimal rain and snowfalls over the past four years. The snowpack is our main water supply and has been below average for four consecutive years. If we keep using the amount of water we are using now, we will completely run out. We are currently using our groundwater, kind of like our backup storage.
To tell the truth, farms are using up most of our water supply, and by raising so much livestock, we waste water, land and we pollute the earth. Cows create methane, which is a greenhouse gas. Animal agriculture is responsible for ⅕ of the gas emissions worldwide. This is a problem that we need to fix.
In science class, we have been learning about water around the world, and how hard it is for people in many places to access clean water, which leads to health problems. Also, many girls around the world are responsible for getting water for their families, which often means walking for hours each day, and missing out on opportunities for education. We are doing a fundraiser for http://www.water.org/, an organization that helps people around the world access clean water. This is why we are writing this blog: To educate the public about water, in California and around the world!

Altogether I think that it is important that we should save as much water as possible, because we are currently in a drought. Not everybody understands that water doesn’t magically appear, but I hope that you now understand how precious it really is.
Cows take up a lot of water and resources. Cows take up more water and land than any other animal on the stock market. To produce one eight ounce steak it takes about 1,000 gallons of water. In an article we read in class, Gidon Eshel, a professor at BCEP, told the Huffington Post, “Really there’s no question about it. Reduce beef whenever possible.” This quote tells us that beef should be avoided as much as much as you can because that will help the environment.
I hope that one day the people of this selfish country will realize how precious our limited supply of water is. Water is the all time most precious thing on this entire planet more valuable than diamonds, gold, and money. All I’m saying is think before you use water.
You should eat less beef. It wastes water, land and it pollutes. Gideon Eshel, a professor, said, “Reduce beef whenever possible.” Some don’t agree. Some say that by the time you order a steak, so much water has been wasted already that its too late to make a difference. But, if we all cut back, there will be no demand and farmers will not raise cows anymore. Some say it is worth it, but are 3 burgers really worth 1,232 gallons of water in our drought, when chicken does not take that much?
P.S To save the cows and the earth, try “Meatless Mondays” where you don’t eat meat on Mondays, or you can try “vegan till 6” where you can try being vegan until 6 pm.
In conclusion, 1 person can’t make a difference but if we can encourage more and more people to use less water, eventually we will run out but it will take much more time to. And hopefully it rains before we run out. We can cut down on beef. Waste less water while doing laundry, washing dishes, and watering our lawns. This is why we should save water and eat less beef.
