The Purpose of the Blog

In California, we are in the middle of a drought. Our water uses are too much for the minimal rain and snowfalls over the past four years. The snowpack is our main water supply and has been below average for four consecutive years. If we keep using the amount of water we are using now, we will completely run out. We are currently using our groundwater, kind of like our backup storage.

To tell the truth, farms are using up most of our water supply, and by raising so much livestock, we waste water, land and we pollute the earth. Cows create methane, which is a greenhouse gas. Animal agriculture is responsible for ⅕ of the gas emissions worldwide. This is a problem that we need to fix.

In science class, we have been learning about water around the world, and how hard it is for people in many places to access clean water, which leads to health problems. Also, many girls around the world are responsible for getting water for their families, which often means walking for hours each day, and missing out on opportunities for education. We are doing a fundraiser for http://www.water.org/, an organization that helps people around the world access clean water. This is why we are writing this blog: To educate the public about water, in California and around the world!

EAT LESS BEEF
by Davey B.

Should you eat beef? I don't think so! Think about this scenario: You sit down in a restaurant. You order a steak. Guess what? You just wasted over 1,200 gallons of water. And land. And you polluted. Do not eat beef, it’s bad for the environment.

Beef uses and wastes water and land.  Beef uses 28 times more land than other animal products and 11 times more water. It takes 1,232 gallons of water to make one 8 ounce steak! This data proves that cows waste water and land, which is a problem, especially since we are in a drought.

Beef adds to the greenhouse effect, and not in a good way. Cows produce 5 times as much pollution as other products. When cows pass gas they release methane, a greenhouse gas. It is worse than CO2. This shows that raising cows is bad for the environment. This also shows that if we want to help the environment, we should raise less cows.

You should eat less beef. It wastes water, land and it pollutes.   Gideon Eshel, a professor, said, “Reduce beef whenever possible.” Some don’t agree. Some say that by the time you order a steak, so much water has been wasted already that its too late to make a difference. But, if we all cut back, there will be no demand and farmers will not raise cows anymore. Some say it is worth it, but are 3 burgers really worth 1,232 gallons of water in our drought, when chicken does not take that much?
