The Purpose of the Blog

In California, we are in the middle of a drought. Our water uses are too much for the minimal rain and snowfalls over the past four years. The snowpack is our main water supply and has been below average for four consecutive years. If we keep using the amount of water we are using now, we will completely run out. We are currently using our groundwater, kind of like our backup storage.

To tell the truth, farms are using up most of our water supply, and by raising so much livestock, we waste water, land and we pollute the earth. Cows create methane, which is a greenhouse gas. Animal agriculture is responsible for ⅕ of the gas emissions worldwide. This is a problem that we need to fix.

In science class, we have been learning about water around the world, and how hard it is for people in many places to access clean water, which leads to health problems. Also, many girls around the world are responsible for getting water for their families, which often means walking for hours each day, and missing out on opportunities for education. We are doing a fundraiser for http://www.water.org/, an organization that helps people around the world access clean water. This is why we are writing this blog: To educate the public about water, in California and around the world!

EAT LESS RED MEAT!!!!!
by William Ploutski

When you’re eating a nice juicy hamburger, remember what it must have took to produce this piece of red meat. A living thing (a cow) was killed just so you could taste the taste of it’s flesh. It took lots and lots of water just to produce the little slab of meat, and it’s risking a global disaster because of the greenhouse gases. This is why I think we shouldn't eat as much red meat.  So read my essay and save planet earth.
One reason that eating red meat is bad is because it uses SO MUCH WATER. Studies  have shown that 8 ounces of red meat uses 1,000 gallons! That’s less than 2 hamburgers! It also uses 28 times more land and 11 times more water. This tells us that if you eat too much red meat, you’ll waste quite a lot of water. Some people say that red meat is tasty but I argue that water is the center of this planet and we all need it.

Another reason that raising a lot of cows is bad is because cows produce a lot of greenhouse gases. When cows pass gas, they produce lots of methane, also known as a “greenhouse gas”. Also, the way they kill the cows (the slaughter house) creates a lot of greenhouse gases. This tells us that if we raise to many cows, they will pollute the air and cause global warming.

A more overall reason that eating red meat is bad is because we are basically killing a living thing for our enjoyment and entertainment.  If cows killed a bunch of humans and started eating them we would go crazy! Even though we’re doing the exact same thing. Some people say that meat is the only source of protein but there is other sources of protein like beans, cheese and eggs. This means that if you are vegetarian, you still have sources of protein.

As you see, red meat is a huge offender when it comes to global warming and running out of water. If you think that cows producing greenhouse gasses by farting is funny, then you’re basically laughing at something that could end the world. Now, imagine you were a cow, you think you are living a great life. You get plenty of food and water. Then, you learn that you are basically being fattened up just so you could get killed and eaten. Thats what every cow probably feels. So please, decrease your daily diet of red meat, and go ahead, save the world.

P.S To save the cows and the earth, try “Meatless Mondays” where you don’t eat meat on Mondays, or you can try “vegan till 6” where you can try being vegan until 6 pm.
