The Purpose of the Blog

In California, we are in the middle of a drought. Our water uses are too much for the minimal rain and snowfalls over the past four years. The snowpack is our main water supply and has been below average for four consecutive years. If we keep using the amount of water we are using now, we will completely run out. We are currently using our groundwater, kind of like our backup storage.

To tell the truth, farms are using up most of our water supply, and by raising so much livestock, we waste water, land and we pollute the earth. Cows create methane, which is a greenhouse gas. Animal agriculture is responsible for ⅕ of the gas emissions worldwide. This is a problem that we need to fix.

In science class, we have been learning about water around the world, and how hard it is for people in many places to access clean water, which leads to health problems. Also, many girls around the world are responsible for getting water for their families, which often means walking for hours each day, and missing out on opportunities for education. We are doing a fundraiser for http://www.water.org/, an organization that helps people around the world access clean water. This is why we are writing this blog: To educate the public about water, in California and around the world!

Save Water, Save our Planet
by Mc Blousen Hosen
steak the yummy, delicious, Sunday night BBQ treat, but wait! Have you ever thought how it affected the earth?  Let me show you!  As we learned in science class,   there are many ways that we hurt the environment, but one of the worst is MEAT.  One reason is they waste a lot of water. Reason two: they release too much greenhouse gas. We should eat less meat because it is bad for the environment.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Cows

Cows take up a lot of water and resources. Cows take up more water and land than any  other animal on the stock market. To produce one eight ounce steak it takes about 1,000 gallons of water.  In an article we read in class, Gidon Eshel, a professor at BCEP, told the Huffington Post, “Really there’s no question about it. Reduce beef whenever possible.” This quote tells us that  beef should be avoided as much as much as you can because that will help the environment.

Cows release a greenhouse gas called methane in their feces and gas.  This is important because methane gas pollutes the earth and causes climate change.  This is even more important because climate change will lead to more disastrous results on a global scale.  Some people prefer to just cut meat from their diet entirely or just for one day. In the article, mogul Richard Branson, who chose to cut beef out of his diet permanently, wrote in his blog “I never feel like I’m missing out on anything.” Some people say that even if we cut back on beef, they will have already have used the water on the steak, so what’s the point? But I say that even if you can cut back,it will help, maybe only a little bit, but help nonetheless.

I hope that one day the people of this selfish country will realize how precious our  limited supply of water is.  Water is the all time most precious thing on this entire planet more valuable than diamonds, gold, and money.  All I’m saying is think before you use water.
